The global stationery category is evolving beyond functional utility into something more sensory, tactile and lifestyle driven. Growth in journaling, gifting and creative self-expression, combined with increasing demand for analogue experiences, is reshaping consumer expectations.
At the same time, retailers are looking for new ways to differentiate within a crowded and price-driven category - particularly through products that create joy-led connection, encourage collectability and drive impulse purchase.
A2V identified an opportunity to translate Palm Pals’ iconic tactile personality into stationery and gifting. Where Palm Pals has already built a strong personality-led connection through its soft, collectible characters, there was limited expansion into categories beyond toys.
The goal was to translate the brand’s emotional appeal, softness and personality into everyday-use products without losing the charm and recognisability that made Palm Pals successful in the first place.
The challenge was ensuring the range felt authentically Palm Pals - not simply licensed stationery featuring character graphics.
A2V approached the project through material-led product innovation, using the Palm Pals universe as a foundation for a more compelling and engaging retail experience.
1. Translating Plush DNA into Product
Rather than relying on flat graphic application, A2V focused on translating the tactile qualities of Palm Pals into functional stationery formats through:
· Soft-touch materials and finishes
· Rounded, character-inspired silhouettes
· Integrated 3D detailing
· Compact, handheld proportions inspired by the brand’s ‘fits in your hand’ ethos
2. Building a Collectable Product Ecosystem
The range was designed as a connected system rather than standalone SKUs; encouraging collecting, repeat purchase and cross-category engagement.
3. Designing for Collectable Utility
Products were developed to function as both practical tools and emotional companions, balancing everyday usability with comfort, personality and playfulness.
4. Creating Retail Standout
By introducing tactility and material contrast into a traditionally flat category, the concept creates clear visual differentiation in-store while maintaining accessible price points and scalable retail potential.
A2V developed a cohesive stationery and gifting concept spanning categories, including:
· Notebooks
· Pencil cases
· Writing instruments
· Backpacks and lifestyle accessories
Each product was designed to maintain consistent character integrity across formats and materials through careful adaptation of facial expressions, proportions and personality traits.
The range blends functionality with tactile engagement, introducing material-led innovation into stationery while remaining commercially scalable across global retail environments.
From concept direction and category planning through to product development and retail thinking, A2V built the project with flexibility, collectability and international rollout potential in mind.
Soft-touch finishes, rounded silhouettes and plush-inspired detailing transformed everyday stationery into tactile, desk-friendly collectibles.
The concept bridges toy, gifting and stationery behaviours - unlocking broader demographics and creating more flexible retail placement opportunities.
